From Mill to Knit: The Journey of Norwegian Wool

Imagine knitting with wool so rich in history and quality that each stitch connects you to centuries of tradition. This is the magic of Norwegian wool, and I’m thrilled to invite you to celebrate it with me during Norwegian Wool Month.

Over the past few years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to visit some of Norway’s most revered yarn mills. In 2022, I visited Hillesvåg yarn outside of Bergen. I had already made a conscious choice to knit with yarns sourced and produced in Norway, but it was after one of the owners took the time to show me around the mill and share its story—from the late 1800s up until today—that I decided to dive deeper into learning about all aspects of Norwegian wool.

This journey also took me to Selbu Spinneri, a small and fairly young spinneri with an exciting history and some amazing yarns. These visits not only deepened my love for Norwegian wool but also sparked a passion to share this treasure with the world. The first Norwegian Wool Month last year was born from this passion, and the overwhelming response proved that there is a global community eager to learn about and celebrate these wools.

Due to the huge success last year, this year, from August 7th to 27th, we are bringing back some of our beloved speakers with fresh presentations, and we are adding a new speaker, a local spinner who will share insights from a single spinner’s perspective. We’ll explore topics ranging from the journey of Selbu Spinneri to the historical significance of wool factories in Norway.

Norwegian wool stands out for its durability, warmth, and the unique characteristics imparted by our native sheep breeds. It’s not just about the material; it’s about preserving a piece of our cultural heritage.
