The Mystery of the Sitting Pad: Revealed!

.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been sharing photos of a sitting pad in progress—from casting on to the final, felted product. And let me tell you, the questions have been pouring in! How do you make it? Where can you find the pattern? And perhaps most curiously — what exactly is a sitting pad?

Well, let me fill you in... 😊

The Pattern

First of all, this sitting pad is knit from the center outwards. You begin with just 7 stitches and eventually grow to 256 stitches—don’t worry, it’s all explained step by step in the pattern.

But here’s the fun part: the pattern will be exclusively available in the Nook during the fourth week of October, as the grand finale of our 4-week Pre-Holiday/Christmas knitting event!

What's the Nook?

I’m so glad you asked! The Nook is our vibrant and cozy knitting community, where we gather for chats, Zoom calls, fun challenges, and special pattern releases. As one of our lovely members said earlier this year, "This is the knitting community I didn't know I needed." 🧡

Usually, the Nook opens for new signups just one week every 4-6 weeks. But because of the high demand, we’ve extended signups for an extra week. So if you’ve been thinking about joining us, now’s the perfect time. Check it out, and we’ll see you on the inside!

So... What Is a Sitting Pad?

Exactly what it sounds like—a pad to sit on! 😄 Let me explain why it’s so handy, especially if you grew up in Norway like I did.

Here, we love to hike and ski, depending on the season, of course. We also go to sports events — indoors and outdoors, with or without seats. And one thing is consistent across all of these activities: the weather. Sometimes it’s biting cold, other times it’s just a bit chilly (and trust me, that’s true even in summer!).

When we go for a hike or a skiing trip, it’s common to carry a backpack with a warm drink and a packed lunch. We plan to stop midway, sit down, enjoy the view, and rest. But when you sit on a cold log, stone, or even a chilly seat at a sports arena, it can be, well… uncomfortable.

Enter: the sitting pad! 🎉

Most people have store-bought foam ones from sports shops, but if you’re lucky enough to have a crafty friend or family member, you might get a beautiful, handmade sitting pad—just like the one we’re knitting this month in the Nook.

And hey, even if you’re not heading out on a hike, sitting pads come in handy when the seasons change. Picture yourself in early spring, when the sun has finally returned after a long winter, but the air is still crisp. It’s the perfect time to grab a coffee, head to the terrace, and enjoy the fresh season—your sitting pad in hand to keep you cozy.

Want to Knit Your Own?

If this sounds like your cup of tea (or warm coffee 😉), you can join us in the Nook and knit your very own Mountain Rose sitting pad. The pattern will be released in the last week of October.

Happy hiking — and happy knitting!

Love,
Anne
