Discover the Magic of Lifted Increases in Knitting
Nov 16, 2024
There are numerous ways to increase stitches in knitting, each with its own benefits and nuances. Today, I’m excited to share one of my favorite techniques with you: the "lifted increase."
Generations of Stitches
As you knit, you’ll notice a series of stitches on your needle. Beneath each one lies a column of stitches from previous rows. Think of these as the "generations of stitches":
- The stitch currently on your needle is the child stitch.
- The stitch directly below it is the mother stitch.
- Below that is the grandmother stitch.
(Note: The child stitch on your left needle aligns with the mother stitch on your right needle.)
Lifted Increase Leaning Right
This technique involves the "mother stitch" from the left needle.
- Identify the mother stitch (the stitch directly below the child stitch on your left needle).
- Lift the mother stitch onto the left needle.
- Knit into this lifted stitch.
- Knit the child stitch as usual.
This increase leans gently to the right, blending seamlessly into your work.
Lifted Increase Leaning Left
This method uses the grandmother stitch from the right needle.
- Locate the grandmother stitch (two rows below the child stitch on your right needle).
- Lift the grandmother stitch onto the left needle.
- Knit into this lifted stitch in the back.
- Continue knitting as usual.
Now, you’ve added another increase method to your knitting repertoire!
